Course Overview

The course provides a fair test for golfers of all abilities.  It is built on well-drained Downland allowing play all year round and rarely closes but has much more variety to offer than the traditional Downland course

At 6,469 yards from the white tees (6,144 from the yellow tees and 5,569 from the ladies tees), the Marlborough course is a fair challenge for low handicappers and less experienced players alike.

Marlborough Course Planner: Individual Hole Analysis

Hole 1 Par 5
Stroke Index 9

WHITE 513 YARDS | YELLOW 501 YARDS | RED 401 YARDS

Big hitters can go straight up the middle to the ridge, but it’s a 300-yard shot.

It does give the chance to hit the angled green in two. For most, a shot favouring the right of the fairway will open up the dogleg for a well placed second to leave a short iron to the green.

Hole 2 Par 3
Stroke Index 17

WHITE 149 YARDS | YELLOW 149 YARDS | RED 141 YARDS

A pretty par three but beware the three bunkers guarding the green!

Hole 3 Par 4
Stroke Index 5

WHITE 396 YARDS | YELLOW 367 YARDS | RED 357 YARDS

Another risk-and-reward hole.

A big hit over the corner of the dogleg will leave a simple chip onto the green but anything too ambitious will end up out of bounds.

The prudent player will take an iron or a small wood for position and accept the more difficult second shot.

Hole 4 Par 4
Stroke Index 1

WHITE 407 YARDS | YELLOW 395 YARDS | RED 372 YARDS

What you see is what you get. A longish par four with no bunkers. The slope tends to have your ball running left so favour the right side of the fairway.

Hole 5 Par 3
Stroke Index 13

WHITE 199 YARDS | YELLOW 178 YARDS | RED 166 YARDS

The big green will hold a well-struck tee shot.

Short is better than long, however.

Overshoot the green and you are looking at a four or a five!

Hole 6 Par 4
Stroke Index 7

WHITE 359 YARDS | YELLOW 348 YARDS | RED 325 YARDS

Keep your drive up the left, the slope will take your ball well to the right and may leave you blocked out for a second to the green.

Hole 7 Par 5
Stroke Index 3

WHITE 497 YARDS | YELLOW 492 YARDS | RED 398 YARDS

The big hitters can get here in two but this hole gives everyone a chance.

Two decent shots should leave an iron to the multi-cambered green, probably the percentage play in any case.

Hole 8 Par 3
Stroke Index 15

WHITE 195 YARDS | YELLOW 185 YARDS | RED 122 YARDS

Aim your drive to the right half of the green.

Don’t overdo it!

Anything hanging up on the slope to the right leaves a fiendishly difficult chip.

Hole 9 Par 5
Stroke Index 11

WHITE 493 YARDS | YELLOW 493 YARDS | RED 400 YARDS

This par five can give you problems if you get out of position.

A second to the crest of the hill is what you are aiming for, leaving a straightforward iron to the green.

Hole 10 Par 5
Stroke Index 10

WHITE 534 YARDS | YELLOW 525 YARDS | RED 462 YARDS

A long par five to an angled green guarded by bunkers.

The best approach shot is from the left of the fairway, taking the front bunkers out of play.

Hole 11 Par 4
Stroke Index 16

WHITE 346 YARDS | YELLOW 335 YARDS | RED 326 YARDS

A deceptive hole.

The long green with an upslope at the front makes the second shot longer than you think!

Take careful note of the pin position it can make as much as two clubs difference.

Hole 12 Par 4
Stroke Index 8

WHITE 369 YARDS | YELLOW 348 YARDS | RED 319 YARDS

Usually playing downwind, you can watch your drive soar majestically down the left half of the fairway – perfect!

Now you have opened up the green to a high approach shot.

Anything running will go straight through.

Hole 13 Par 4
Stroke Index 2

WHITE 393 YARDS | YELLOW 384 YARDS | RED 357 YARDS

Now you are back into the wind.

For most, hitting this green in two is a job well done.

You may still face a tricky putt – this green has a ridge at the front left.

Hole 14 Par 3
Stroke Index 14

WHITE 181 YARDS | YELLOW 160 YARDS | RED 155 YARDS

Sullivan’s View – what a hole!

Great views over the downs and down the valley to Rockley and Hackpen.

The green slopes away from you and with out of bounds on your right this is a tough shot from the back tees.

Hole 15 Par 4
Stroke Index 4

WHITE 405 YARDS | YELLOW 389 YARDS | RED 340 YARDS

Your chance to hit your longest ever drive!

Get it going right and a big bounce down the road then its all downhill to Marlborough High Street!

So if you want to finish the hole go left of the fairway bunkers.

Hole 16 Par 4
Stroke Index 18

WHITE 309 YARDS | YELLOW 292 YARDS | RED 277 YARDS

The big hitters will consider going for the green here.

But beware!

There’s a lot of rough ground and trees between you and the hole so it really is a gamble.

Hole 17 Par 3
Stroke Index 6

WHITE 186 YARDS | YELLOW 177 YARDS | RED 168 YARDS

Favour the left half of the green with your tee shot but mind that bunker.

Anything slightly to the right will run down into some rough ground.

Hole 18 Par 5
Stroke Index 12

WHITE 538 YARDS | YELLOW 526 YARDS | RED 483 YARDS

A great finishing hole.

Tee shot and second need to be well placed to avoid trouble.

Another long green so take note of the pin position.

Well played! You’ve earned a nice drink at the bar!
